Michael Ortiz, Frank and Ora Lee Marble Professor of Aeronautics and Mechanical Engineering, has received the highest academic distinction from the Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM) in a ceremony chaired by its Rector, Guillermo Cisneros, accompanied by José Manuel Torralba, general director of Universities and Superior Artistic Teachings of the Community of Madrid. Professor Ortiz was recognized as one of the leaders in theoretical and computational solid mechanics. Rector Cisneros stated that the curriculum and life path of Professor Ortiz is "an example of what a true Master - teacher with capital letters - should achieve or at least maintain as a goal. Luis Phillipe Tosi, a graduate student working with Professor Tim Colonius, is a recipient of the 2019 Richard B. Chapman Memorial Award. His doctorate research focuses on experiments, numerical simulations, and modeling to understand fluid-structure instabilities that make flow energy harvesting devices possible. The Richard B. Chapman Memorial Award is given to an EAS graduate student in hydrodynamics who has distinguished himself or herself in research.

Atwater, Jr., Howard Hughes Professor of Applied Physics and Materials Science; Director, Joint Center for Artificial Photosynthesis, has received the 2019 Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) William Cherry Award. Computation and Neural Systems student Hanwen (Lily) Zhang, advised by Professor Thanos Siapas, is a recipient of the 2019 Henry Ford II Scholar Award. Her research interests include exploring how different brain regions interact to give rise to goal-oriented behaviors and our ability to learn, remember and generalize our knowledge to novel situations. This summer, she will be working as a SURF fellow to explore the hippocampal dependence of auditory associative learning.
