Graduate Admissions

If you are considering applying to Caltech as a candidate for graduate admission, please make sure to first fully explore the option websites that correspond to your interests.

Many options have entire sections of their website devoted to information for prospective graduate students, including FAQs. Because each option is unique, it is important that you visit each option website individually for the areas that interest you. Links are in the box at right.

Once you have identified which option(s) most interest you, visit the Graduate Admissions Office to find out more about what is required to apply.

Finally, several options publish brochures with information for prospective graduate students. These may be requested from the Graduate Admissions Office, or pdf versions may be viewed by clicking on the links in box at right.

We also suggest you take a look at ENGenious, the publication for alumni and friends of the Engineering and Applied Science Division for another perspective on the research activities of the Division.

To get an idea of what life at Caltech is like on a day-to-day basis, please visit Caltech Today. Research news, social and cultural activities, and calendars are available on this website, as well as general annoucements.

Undergraduate Admissions

If you are considering applying to Caltech as an undergraduate, you should know that we're a small scholarly community where history and tradition coexist with a passion for innovation, intense intellectual curiosity, and a healthy amount of craziness, where it's relatively easy to find your niche, be known for yourself, and connect with people as colleagues and friends.

The best place to find information is the Caltech Undergraduate Admissions Website. There you will find forms and dates, as well as an in-depth look at what life is like as a "Techer."

The options (majors) available for undergraduates within Engineering and Applied Science include the following (specialized concentrations are listed under an option):

  • Applied & Computational Mathematics
  • Applied Physics
  • Computer Science
  • Electrical Engineering

Communications and Signal Processing
Control
Electronic Circuits
Microwave and Radio Engineering
Optoelectronics
Solid-State Electronics

  • Engineering & Applied Science

Aeronautics
Computation and Neural Systems
Environmental Science and Engineering
Materials Science
Structural Mechanics

  • Mechanical Engineering

Please see the Caltech Catalog for full details on options, and contact the Undergraduate Admissions Office for details on the application and admissions process.

In addition, the Independent Studies Program allows students to design, with faculty advice, a customized course of study to investigate topics not covered by any of the traditional options.
